Samsung has for a long time teased us with a folding smartphone and folks have grown tired of the rumours. This time though, this might actually be real. DJ Koh, the president of Samsung Mobile, told CNBC last Tuesday that Samsung will unveil details about its folding phone later this year. Koh also hinted that the company might share more info about it at its Samsung Developer Conference in November. See, Samsung has been pretty tight-lipped about this new type of phone, letting on as little information as possible but this revelation coming from the president himself could mean the device is a lot closer to launch than it’s ever been.
Samsung has been developing and experimenting with bendable OLED displays for many years now. We saw the first prototype of the same as far back as 2012. Since then, Samsung has been reportedly testing dual-screen smartphones, with the aim of bringing some type of device to market. In the interview with CNBC, the Samsung Mobile president doesn’t drop many hints as to what we should expect from Samsung’s foldable smartphone, but he does admit the device and its features need to make consumers react with “wow, this is the reason Samsung made it.” “We’re continually evolving our smartphone portfolio to provide our customers with new and exciting innovations and experiences,” a Samsung spokesperson said in a statement. “At this time, we don’t have anything to share about future devices.
